Course Description:
This course explores evidence-based protocols for in-office implant care, including safe and effective instrumentation, polishing debridement techniques including the use of air polishing devices. Participants will critically examine commonly taught practices—such as flossing around implants—and review current research to determine when these recommendations are beneficial, unnecessary, or potentially harmful. Emphasis is placed on selecting appropriate tools and techniques based on implant tissues, implant type, restorative design, and patient risk factors.

Objectives:

• Identify best practices for in-office implant maintenance, including appropriate assessment, instrumentation, polishing methods, and techniques that minimize damage to implant surfaces and surrounding tissues.
• Evaluate current evidence surrounding home-care recommendations for patients with dental implants, including interdental aids, other appropriate adjunct oral physiotherapy aids, and the ongoing debate regarding flossing.
• Recognize periodontal and peri-implant considerations, including risk factors, early signs of peri-implant disease, and clinical strategies dental hygienists can implement to support long-term implant health.
